Welcome to Donnybrook Medical Services, an AGPAL accredited practice.
Donnybrook Medical Services commenced practice in Donnybrook in 1980 by Dr Denis Cherry. Dr Peter Rae joined the practice in 1988 and shortly took over the practice.
Donnybrook Medical Services moved to our current premises at 41 Bentley Street in July 2011. This purpose built facility was built with the assistance of regional grant funding and the support of the Donnybrook - Balingup Shire.
In late 2018 Dr Rae stepped back as Practice Principal and Dr Wietske van der Velden - Schuijling took over management of the practice.
Donnybrook Medical Services is renowned for providing the best healthcare possible for our patients and our community.
Dr Wietske van der Velden-Schuijling
Dr van der Velden-Schuijling trained at the Radboud University in Netherlands, graduating as a doctor in 2007 and as a fellow General Practitioner in 2012. Welcomed to Donnybrook in 2013. She became an Australian fellow with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 2015.
She believes in the importance of continuity of care, for all groups and combining preventative and curative care. She feels honoured to be able to build her practice and family life in the supportive local community in Donnybrook.
Dr Prathap Kaliaraj
Born and Trained in the United Arab Emirates. Worked in Malaysia for a couple of years before coming to Australia in 2013. His special Interests are in Emergency Medicine, Chronic Disease, Children’s Health and in addition to performing all aspects of General Practice for all ages. He is also involved in minor skin surgery. Prathap's future plans are in regenerative medicine and facial aesthetics in cosmetic medicine. In his spare time he enjoys playing golf and spending time with his family.
Dr Peter Rae
Dr Rae has been practicing at Donnybrook Medical Services for 30 years he has a broad range of medical interests and experience. He has been in Donnybrook since 1989 and has a special interest in country life and people.
Dr Emily Hill
Emily graduated from medical school in the UK in 2010 and worked in the NHS for two years before moving to WA in 2012. Since then she has worked in many of the teaching hospitals in Perth across a variety of specialties before relocating to the South West with her family in 2017 to start work as a GP.
She is interested in all aspects of general practice providing preventative care and active treatment to all members of the community, young and old. Special interests include chronic diseases management, aged care and palliative medicine.
Dr Ridha Akhtar
Dr Akhtar graduated from Western Sydney University in 2017 and has worked in various specialties with her main interests in pediatrics and chronic disease management. She has moved to WA to be closer to family and has been working at Perth Children's hospital prior to relocating to Donnybrook where she has started working as a GP Registrar. She strongly believes in comprehensive patient care and is interested in all aspects of General Practice. During her spare time she loves to bake and spend time with her family.
Our Practice Nurses
Jill graduated as a Registered Nurse from Glasgow Caledonian University in 1994 and worked in medical, surgical, ED & ICU nursing before gaining a wealth of experience as a Practice Nurse.
She moved to WA 19 years ago and lives in Donnybrook with her husband and 2 sons. In her spare time she volunteers with several local sporting clubs and likes to play tennis, run and read.
Kim graduated from nursing in 2006. She grew up in the Donnybrook area as a child and has moved back to the area to raise her children.
Kim enjoys tennis and hockey. She values living in a small country community.
Di graduated in Tasmania in 1976 and has been nursing since. She resides in Donnybrook with husband Murray. Di loves gardening and the Donnybrook community spirit. The most important thing to Di is her family and grandchildren.
Graduate from Warren District Hospital in Nursing 1972. Bernie came to work at the Donnybrook District Hospital in 1973. She left for a 6 month working holiday and returned to Donnybrook 6 months later when she met her husband and has stayed ever since. She has 4 adult children and 12 grandchildren whom mostly live in the area.
She enjoys swimming and a variety of exercise programs, she has a keen interest in the local community and helped with the Asthma foundation to raise money for the Donnybrook heated pool at the Donnybrook Recreation Centre.
