Shared Medical Appointments
Dr Wietske Van Der Velden-Schuijling offers expert advice on Lifestyle Medicine through Shared Medical Appointments.

What is Lifestyle Medicine? Lifestyle medicine is an evidence-based approach that focuses on preventing and treating chronic diseases through healthy behaviors. It is not the same as naturopathy or integrative medicine, although there are similarities. It emphasizes six key pillars: a plant-predominant diet, regular exercise, quality sleep, stress management, social connections, and avoiding harmful substances like tobacco and excessive alcohol. Lifestyle medicine addresses the root causes of illness.
Research shows that lifestyle changes can prevent and even reverse conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. A plant-based diet improves heart health and lowers inflammation, while regular physical activity enhances mental well-being and reduces disease risk. Sleep is crucial for immune function and metabolism, while stress management techniques such as meditation can lower anxiety and improve resilience. Social connections contribute to longevity, and avoiding smoking and alcohol reduces the risk of chronic illnesses.
By promoting sustainable health improvements, lifestyle medicine offers a cost-effective and long-term solution to healthcare challenges. As awareness grows, healthcare providers increasingly integrate it into preventive and primary care, shifting the focus from disease treatment to overall well-being. This proactive approach empowers individuals to take control of their health, leading to a healthier, more vibrant life.
